Who We Are.

I used to surrender to this idea that "everything happens for a reason," but you want to know the truth? That is complete and utter bullshit.

Honestly? Shit just happens. Shit happens and you don't know why. There is no rhyme or reason to it.

Bad people live long and happy lives. Innocent kids get cancer and die prematurely after living the last years of their lives in absolute hell. Someone you love gets punished for the wrong things that you have done. Should I continue?

But here's the thing. What happens in your life and why it happens doesn't even matter. It is not what happens to you that should define you. What happens to you should, in all actuality, have absolutely nothing to do with the person that you are.

Now, this is not to say that your environments and your situations do not affect you. On the contrary, they often greatly influence the paths you choose for your life; all I am saying is that what happens in your life should not be part of the definition of who you are.

Too many people rely on circumstance to define themselves, and it honestly just makes me sick.

You are not your age. You are not your illness. You are not your income. You are not your grades. You are not your accomplishments. You are not your failures. You are You and there is nothing more to it.

My name is Emily. I am a determined, optimistic, and enthusiastic young woman. My smile hardly ceases and my giggle is contagious. I refuse to back down, and I want nothing more out of life than to say that I lived it my way.

I refuse to let my situations define me.
